CrossCountry has relaunched its Class 220/221 Voyager trains, which operate on their long-distance services between South-West England and Scotland, and between Manchester and Bournemouth.

The £75m project was carried out with the support of Alstom and Beacon, and comprised a full refresh of the interior and exterior of the carriages, including new seats and tables, and new CrossCountry livery.

Incorporating critical safety and operational systems

Journeo is working with CrossCountry to provide key on-vehicle systems. This includes a train-wide CCTV solution, which connects to the cloud-based Journeo Portal, giving CrossCountry and British Transport Police teams secure and immediate access to footage and data. As part of the project, the forward-facing CCTV equipment, originally supplied by Journeo in 2012, has been refreshed.

A new, automated passenger counting system is also connected to the Journeo Portal. With sensors above each door and between carriages delivering 98% accuracy, the system is an effective tool for combating fare evasion.

The intelligent solutions are designed to provide additional safety and reassurance for passengers and give CrossCountry’s teams new tools to manage incidents and resolve customer service enquiries. They are also being rolled out across the CrossCountry fleet of Class 170 Turbostars in a separate project.
