The new smart ticketing service gives passengers the ability to use a single smart card across to load multiple ticket products to get to their destination.

Currently available for use across buses, there is the possibility that it will soon spread to rail with Birmingham New Street station already having smart card-enabled barriers in preparation.

As the public get behind the scheme, there are hopes it will become an integral part of public transport throughout the Midlands, in the same way the Oyster Card is for London.

21st Century Technology has been active in the project since designing a pilot ticket collection device and has to date installed 83 of the devices along key transport corridors.

Installed on shelters, the devices allow passengers to collect any top-ups they have performed online, simply by presenting their card to the reader. These have been installed in addition to 9 pedestal devices, with a further 8 NFC-powered solutions to come.

Mark Sampey, 21st Century Technology’s smart ticketing specialist, commented: “It has been fantastic to assist Centro in delivering the Swift Card project.

“The sheer scope of hardware and software development that have been required to meet the specifications set by Centro are a testament to 21st century Technology’s ability to deliver the full package – from bespoke equipment installed at unmanned locations to software that conforms to ITSO requirements.”
